Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a KERKKA temporary tattoo last on skin?

Our semi-permanent tattoos typically last 10 to 15 days. They fade gradually as the skin naturally renews itself. Longevity depends on placement and care — areas that experience less friction and moisture usually hold longer (e.g. the upper arm tends to outlast the fingers).

Why do some tattoos last shorter or longer?

Placement and aftercare matter most. Genipin tattoos do not penetrate below the skin — the color develops in the surface layers of the epidermis, so they fade gradually alongside the skin's natural renewal cycle.

To maximize longevity: avoid intense friction and prolonged soaking for the first 24 hours. Once the color has fully developed, keep the skin lightly moisturized (a thin cream is fine). Oils and heavy balms can speed up fading.

How is the tattoo applied? Can I do it myself?

Yes. Application is straightforward and can be done at home — a detailed guide is included in the package.

Skin prep: Make sure the skin is clean and dry. Shave the area if needed, and a light moisturizer applied a few hours beforehand can help create a smooth surface.

Remove the protective film: Carefully peel off the transparent film. Avoid touching the printed design.

Apply: Place the tattoo adhesive side down on the skin, position it precisely, then press a damp cloth firmly and evenly across the surface until fully saturated — hold for approximately 30 seconds.

Remove the backing paper: Peel the paper away slowly. The tattoo will initially appear transparent or faint and will darken over the following hours.

Color development: Immediately after application the design is often nearly invisible; development typically takes 24–48 hours, with full color potentially continuing up to 72 hours.

Aftercare (first days): Avoid rubbing, wear loose clothing the first night (to prevent color transfer), minimize sweating for the first 24–48 h, and do not apply moisturizer or SPF directly over the tattoo while it develops.

Is the tattoo safe for skin? Can it cause an allergic reaction?

Our products are intended for cosmetic use and are generally well-tolerated when applied correctly. Genipin tattoos do not contain PPD (the compound associated with risky "black henna"). That said, individual reactions are possible even with natural ingredients.

If you have sensitive skin or allergies, we recommend a patch test: apply a small amount or mini design to a small area and wait 24 hours. Do not use on irritated or broken skin.

Can children use these tattoos?

Temporary tattoos are suitable for children, though we recommend adult supervision (especially for younger children). Children's skin tends to be more sensitive, so a patch test is advisable. Choose placement that sees less friction so the design does not wear off as quickly.

What is genipin and how does the semi-permanent ink work?

Genipin is a natural compound derived from the fruit of the Genipa americana (Huito) tree. Once applied, it reacts with the upper skin layer and gradually produces a dark blue to blue-black color. Because the color forms in the surface layer, the effect fades progressively alongside the skin's natural renewal cycle (typically around 2 weeks).

What is the difference between a genipin tattoo and henna?

Henna is typically brownish (lighter initially, then deepens). Genipin is blue-black and visually resembles real tattoo ink.

Application: Henna is applied as a paste and left to dry for several hours. A genipin tattoo applies quickly via a transfer — place the design, dampen and press, then peel the backing after about 30 seconds.

Color development: Both henna and genipin deepen after application. With genipin, the shade develops gradually, usually over 24–48 hours (full color can take up to approximately 72 hours).

Longevity: Both typically last around 1–2 weeks — depending on placement and care.

Can I remove the tattoo early if I change my mind?

Instant removal is generally not possible, as the color forms within the surface skin layer. You can speed up fading by washing more frequently with warm water and soap, gentle exfoliation, or a mild scrub mitt. Micellar water or an alcohol wipe can also help. Aggressive scrubbing is not recommended — it can irritate the skin.

Is the tattoo water-resistant? What about showering, sports, or swimming?

Normal water contact (showering, hand washing, light sweating) is fine. Extended soaking, sauna, or frequent swimming in a pool or the sea can cause faster fading. After application, we recommend waiting at least 24 hours before swimming so the color has time to fully develop and set.

How should I store the product if I don't use it all at once?

Store tattoos in a dry, dark place at normal room temperature, ideally in the original sealed packaging and inside the box included with your order. Keep away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture (not in the bathroom or on a windowsill). Only open the packaging immediately before application — once opened, use the tattoo right away to prevent damage or moisture absorption.

Do you offer custom designs or made-to-order tattoos?

We currently offer collections of carefully designed motifs. Small-batch custom production is not available at this time. For larger orders (e.g. events, corporate, teams) we can discuss options on a case-by-case basis.

Have an interesting design idea? Send it to us by email. If we like it and incorporate it into our range over time, we will send the finished design to your address as a gift.

Are tattoos only blue-black, or are there colors?

Genipin naturally produces a dark blue to blue-black shade that closely resembles the look of classic tattoo ink. We currently focus on this realistic effect. If color variants are introduced in the future, this will always be clearly stated on the specific product listing.

Can I apply the tattoo to my face or sensitive areas?

Use caution. Facial skin is more sensitive and washed more frequently, so longevity may be shorter. Avoid the area around the eyes and lips. If you want a face tattoo, test it on a small area first and monitor the skin's response.

What if the tattoo smudges or doesn't transfer properly?

The most common cause is shifting the transfer during application or placing it on areas where skin flexes significantly (e.g. fingers). If the design doesn't work out, it cannot be "touched up" like a sticker. If you notice the problem right after removing the film or template, try washing the area quickly with soap and water. If you need advice, contact us — we're happy to help.

What if I want to return or make a complaint?

You have the right to withdraw from the contract within 14 days of delivery (applies to unopened and unused goods). Contact us by email and send the item back; we will refund to your account. For hygiene reasons, opened or used products cannot be returned.

Complaints: If a product is defective (e.g. damaged packaging or a non-functioning product), contact us. We will resolve the situation with a replacement or refund.
